Why do the media keep saying Khyra Ishaq was home educated? She was being kept away from school!!! Also, the family were visited by an Educational Social Worker, amongst other professionals and so it would have made no difference had she been properly de-registered from school.......these people let her down. The new legislation says it wants to be able to inspect the homes of elective home educated children and interview the children.......Khyra was seen and although her home was a bit untidy , the kitchen was full of food......but she starved to death!! This family were known to social services and they had received reports of concerns from school and other sources.
This case is being used to try and convince people that home educators need more moderating because this is what could happen to any home educated child. Despite there being no evidence at all that HE children are in any more danger than any other child, it has been suggested that because they don't go to school, they are "hidden" and therefore need extra protection. "Hmmmmmm"...you might say "they have a point!"............until you look at the bigger picture. First of all they are not hidden....they still go the the GP, shops, libraries, activities etc. etc. Secondly, someone who is abusing their children is going to keep that hidden, whether they go to school or not.
Under present legislation, children are protected, whether or not they go to school. If there are concerns, the authorities have enough power to come into your home and see the child and take whatever action they see fit.
I think that in view of the concerns regarding the safety of children in general, we would be better spending the money not on what is being proposed but on improving the present services!
